Bible Verses About Comfort

Scripture's idea of comfort has a current to it: what we receive in our own hard seasons is meant to flow outward to someone else in theirs. God is called the God of all comfort, and the comfort he gives is never only for us to keep. These verses meet sorrow gently — and then point it toward another person who is hurting.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

Comfort is given with a purpose attached — so that we can turn and give it away. Your hardest season may become someone else's relief.

Matthew 5:4
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

A blessing spoken directly over grief. Mourning is not a failure of faith here; it is a place where comfort is promised.

Psalm 23:4
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

The comfort isn't a way around the valley — it's a companion through it. Thou art with me is the whole of it.

Isaiah 66:13
As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

The tenderest image scripture reaches for — a mother soothing a child. That is the gentleness being described.

John 14:27
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

A different kind of peace than the world hands out — deeper, steadier, and meant to quiet a troubled heart.
