The Bible does not rush grief. Jesus wept at the tomb of his friend Lazarus — even knowing what was about to happen. The Psalms are full of lament that doesn't resolve neatly. These verses sit with grief honestly, and offer not an end to it but a presence within it.
The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Nigh — near, close. Not watching from a distance. The broken heart is exactly where God is closest.
Jesus wept.
The shortest verse in the Bible. Jesus knew Lazarus would rise — and he still wept. Grief is not a lack of faith. It is love.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Mourning is one of the Beatitudes. Jesus places it among the blessed. Grief is not something to push through — it is something to move through.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Through — not around, not over. The valley is part of the path. The comfort is in the walking together.
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble.
Grief received becomes a capacity to comfort others. What we walk through, we can walk alongside others through.
