Hope in scripture isn't wishful thinking — it's confident expectation. It's trust grounded in something solid. These verses were written in difficult times, by people who had every reason to despair, and chose something else instead.
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
Written to people in exile — not in comfort. Hope spoken into the hardest circumstances.
Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
Hope isn't something we generate. It's something we're filled with.
Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.
Hope requires courage. This verse names both.
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Notice the progression: soar, run, walk. Sometimes hope just means putting one foot in front of the other.
We glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope.
Hope is the end product of a hard road. That makes it durable.
