Bible Verses About Loving Your Enemies

Of everything Jesus taught, this may be the hardest to hear and the easiest to skip past. He did not say to tolerate enemies, or to avoid them. He said to love them, bless them, and pray for them, and he did it himself from the cross. These verses say it plainly.

Matthew 5:44
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Four verbs, each one active: love, bless, do good, pray. None of them is 'wait until they deserve it.'

Luke 6:27-28
But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.

Luke's version adds that it is said to 'you which hear.' It was meant for the people already listening.

Romans 12:20-21
Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

Paul borrows from Proverbs and then adds the line that makes it a way of life: evil is overcome with good, not with more evil.

Proverbs 25:21
If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:

Centuries before the Sermon on the Mount, the instruction was already this concrete: bread and water for the person who wishes you harm.

Luke 23:34
Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

The prayer Jesus prayed for the men driving the nails. He asked that they be forgiven while they were still doing it.
