Bible Verses About Mercy

"I desire mercy, not sacrifice" — Jesus quotes this from the prophet Hosea twice in the Gospels. It was a rebuke to those who had mastered the outward forms of religion while missing its heart. These verses present mercy not as softness, but as one of the central demands of faithful living.

Matthew 9:13
But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Go and learn — Jesus uses the imperative. Mercy is not already understood. It must be sought.

Micah 6:8
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

Three things required. Love mercy — not merely practice it, but love it.

Matthew 5:7
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

From the Beatitudes. The blessing is proportional: those who show mercy receive it.

James 2:13
For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

This is direct. Those who give no mercy will receive none. Mercy and judgment stand in opposition — and mercy wins.

Luke 6:36
Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

The model is God's own character. We are called to reflect it.
