Forgiveness is one of the most repeated themes in all of scripture — and one of the hardest things Jesus asks of us. These verses don't minimize how difficult forgiveness can be. They simply show us why it matters, and what it makes possible.
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Forgiveness isn't optional in Jesus's teaching. It's the condition we live in.
Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
The standard isn't perfection — it's the same grace we've already received.
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Forgiveness flows from kindness and compassion — they're part of the same posture.
If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.
Seven times in a day. Jesus sets a standard that leaves no room for keeping score.
As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
East and west never meet. That's the distance of forgiveness.
