Compassion is at the very heart of Jesus's ministry. Again and again in the Gospels, we read that Jesus was moved with compassion before he healed, before he fed, before he taught. These verses invite us into that same posture — to see others and be genuinely moved.
But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.
Compassion begins with seeing people clearly — not past them.
It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Every morning is a fresh start. Compassion renews itself.
Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous.
Compassion is listed alongside humility — they travel together.
Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother.
Justice and compassion aren't opposites. Scripture calls us to hold both.
Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering.
Compassion is something we actively put on — it takes intention.
