Bible Verses About Truth

"The truth shall set you free" is one of the most quoted phrases from the Gospels — and one of the least examined. These verses look at what Jesus and the apostles said about truth: not just as a theological concept, but as a standard for how we speak, how we live, and how we treat one another.

John 8:32
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Freedom here is not political — it is freedom from self-deception, from false belief, from the bondage of living in unreality.

John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Jesus identifies himself with truth itself — not as someone who teaches it, but as its embodiment.

Ephesians 4:15
But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.

Truth spoken without love is cruelty. Love spoken without truth is flattery. Both are required.

Proverbs 12:17
An honest witness delivers truthful testimony, but a false witness speaks deceit.

Scripture treats truthful speech as a form of deliverance — and false speech as harm done to others.

Zechariah 8:16
These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates.

Truth spoken to your neighbor. Justice administered truthfully. These are community obligations, not just personal virtues.
