Bible Verses About the Least of These

In Matthew 25, Jesus describes the final judgment, and the test is not what anyone believed or said. It is whether they fed the hungry, welcomed the stranger, clothed the naked, and visited the sick and the prisoner. Few passages are quoted so often and lived so rarely.

Matthew 25:40
And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

The whole passage turns on two small words: 'unto me.' The hungry person at the door is, somehow, Jesus.

Matthew 25:35-36
For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

Six needs, six plain actions. Food, drink, welcome, clothing, a visit, a visit. Nothing on the list requires money or a title.

Luke 14:13-14
But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

Jesus' guest list for a feast: the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. The ones who cannot return the invitation.

James 2:15-16
If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

James imagines a kind word offered in place of a coat, and asks what good it did. The question answers itself.

Hebrews 13:3
Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

Remember the prisoner 'as bound with them.' Not from a distance, but as if the chains were on your own wrists.
