Bible Verses About Servant Leadership

When the disciples argued about who was greatest, Jesus did not pick one. He turned the idea upside down: the greatest serves, the chief is a servant, the first is last. Then he washed their feet. The Old Testament adds a warning about putting trust in princes, and a promise for the ruler who judges the poor faithfully.

Matthew 20:26-28
But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

'It shall not be so among you.' Jesus names the way power usually works, and then rules it out for his followers.

Mark 9:35
And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

He sat down first, the posture of a teacher with something important to say. Then: first means last, and servant of all.

John 13:14-15
If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

The Lord and Master with a towel and a basin. 'I have given you an example' is as plain as instruction gets.

Psalm 146:3
Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.

Not in princes, not in the son of man. The psalm is blunt about where help does not come from.

Proverbs 29:14
The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever.

The one thing that establishes a throne forever, according to Proverbs: faithfully judging the poor.
